Session 001: Still in Tune

11/29/1019

TL;DR

Two new arrivals from the village of Marsh Land joined the party during a short rest -- and one departure followed almost immediately. Reality then fractured around them, pulling the group into a pitch-black amphitheater where silence was a weapon and sound had to be fought for. At the end of it all, a mysterious man appeared, played an organ that sealed the breach, and spoke one quiet phrase before vanishing: "...Still in tune."

Session Summary

The party's short rest at the edge of the bog did not stay quiet. Two strangers emerged from the far side of the water: Cathba, a shifter druid sent from the swamp village of Marsh Land, and Aseir, a human barbarian traveling with him. They had come looking for a missing caravan from Slew. Instead they found a bog that smelled wrong, a dome of stolen summer, and a green rune glowing through the brush.

What followed was less of a meeting and more of a collision. Cathba's approach to the giant toad carcasses -- specifically, removing a leg -- was the final thing Juice Sumgai was willing to witness. He left without ceremony.

The remaining party barely had time to take stock. The world began to come apart. Sound lagged behind motion. Two party members froze mid-step. A crack split the air above them like breaking glass, and the ground beneath their feet became wood.

They stood in an amphitheater with no light and no exits.

What waited inside was not a dungeon. It was a place where silence had taken root and was eating outward -- and the only way through was to play.

Arrivals and a Departure

During the short rest, Cathba and Aseir stepped out of the far side of the bog. They had been sent from Marsh Land, a small village in the swamp, after a caravan from Slew failed to arrive. Following the wrongness in the air, they tracked it to the dome and heard voices through the brush. A green rune's glow guided them to the party.

The introductions were brief. Cathba's handling of the toad remains -- specifically, taking one of its legs -- was not received well by everyone. Juice Sumgai had reached his limit. He walked away from the group and did not come back.

The World Goes Wrong

Once the full group had gathered, the environment began to betray itself.

Dusk stepped into the water. The sound arrived late. Thora noticed. Cathba noticed the same wrongness in the wind -- the rustle of leaves came after the branches had already moved. Looking around, Thora found the more alarming detail: N'ail and Rivnee were not moving. Frozen mid-gesture, mid-breath.

A crack opened fifteen feet above the group. It did not tear. It split, the way glass splits -- precise lines spreading outward from a single point. The soil and stone beneath their feet shifted, grain by grain, into a wooden floor. The lights died.

The Pitch-Black Amphitheater

They were in a concert hall with no audience and no light.

Feeling their way up a set of stairs, they found a gong -- and then the Discordant Sparks found them. The creatures did not emerge from smoke. They condensed: distortions in the air drawing sound inward, taking vaguely humanoid shapes with limbs that tapered into vibrating lines and centers that looked like compressed pressure. Faint cracks of dull gold flickered across their surfaces, like something trying and failing to shine through.

The party defeated them.

The Four Instruments

Four instruments waited in the pit, each in a state of wrong. The party worked through them one by one.

The Xylophone had a bar seated lower than the rest, its note hollow and drifting. The Great Drum was drawn too tight, quivering under invisible pressure. The Gong's surface rippled like disturbed water, reflecting an amphitheater that did not quite match the one around them. The Chimes cycled through their sequence with one note perpetually absent.

Each instrument responded to precision -- to the right strike at the right moment, or the right understanding of what was broken. All four succeeded. A sharp note rang true. A deep bass rolled outward. The gong pushed back against the crack. The final chime sounded and the pattern completed.

The Greater Discordant Echo

It rose from the silence after the instruments were played.

Not a bigger Spark. Something accumulated. Its body looked like stone under long strain, fissures running through it and glowing faintly. Its head spiraled inward. Sound near it became flat and dull, as though the air itself was reluctant to carry anything.

The party fought it. It grew.

When they pushed it to the edge of collapse, it grew again.

The Man in the Seam

Absolute silence followed the Echo's collapse. Not thin. Total.

Then a sound: a soft, deliberate slide. Wood against wood.

A vertical seam appeared at the edge of the orchestra pit. It widened -- not tearing, sliding -- like a small door built into the fabric of reality. Beyond it: dim resonance and the towering pipes of a vast organ.

A man stood before it. He did not step through. He leaned and looked out at the crack, then at the pit. A subtle movement of his foot, and somewhere beyond the seam the organ sounded -- low, subsonic, layered. The fracture began to close, sealing like thread drawn through torn cloth.

The music built and rolled through the pit. The drums found their depth. The xylophone bars snapped level. The gong gleamed. The chimes completed their missing note.

Sound returned. Silence had nowhere left to exist.

He looked at the three of them. Not surprised. Not triumphant. Curious.

"...Still in tune."

The seam closed. Reality was seamless.

The frozen party members resumed motion. No time had passed.

Explorations and Discoveries

  • Cathba: Shifter druid from Marsh Land, sent to investigate the missing Slew caravan. New party member.
  • Aseir: Human barbarian traveling with Cathba. New party member.
  • Marsh Land: A small village in the swamp with ties to the Slew trade route.
  • Juice Sumgai: Has departed the party.
  • The Amphitheater: A space reached through a fracture in reality. Its instruments maintain something. Its silence is a force.
  • Discordant Sparks and the Greater Echo: Creatures of accumulated silence. They grow when unchecked and condense rather than emerge.
  • The Man in the Seam: An unknown figure who appeared through a tear in reality and played a massive organ to repair the fracture. He showed specific interest in the party before the seam closed. His parting words suggest this was not his first assessment of them.

What Comes Next

The party has taken a long rest. The node is repaired, the amphitheater is gone, and the seam has closed.

Open questions:

  • Who is the man who appeared, and what is the organ he played?
  • What caused the fracture in the first place -- and are there others?
  • What is the underground base beneath the dome, and who built it?
  • Why were only some party members frozen -- and what does "still in tune" mean for those who were not?
