Grayhaven

Overview

Grayhaven — Jewel of the West — is the most powerful city in the Greenwold and its unofficial capital. The financial, religious, and political hub of the realm, it sits on the best bay in the region at the crossroads of trade routes. Though the Greenwold has never unified into a single province, Grayhaven has long been regarded as the center of it all.

Atmosphere

Streets are filled with the boisterous shouts of merchants, the creak of ships in the harbor and the rumble of carts. Wherever you go, the jingle of gold coins seems to be nearby.

The smell of fresh horse dung is mercifully blotted out by a waft of heavy incense that rolls from the open doors of a grand temple.

The wind brings the tastes of a salty sea breeze, cutting through the acrid smoke and fumes of the tanners, smiths, and magewrights who crowd the street fronts.

Districts

  • The Merchant District: Daily bazaars and exotic luxuries, extending beyond the city walls.
  • The Hight Street District: Home to artisan guilds, temples, and magical societies.
  • The Waterfront District: Shipping companies and free merchants; a constant flow of goods and money into the city, and often dangerous.
  • The Sewers: A vast network of ancient tunnels and waterways that descend deep under the city in an unmappable tangle — ruins which predate the city itself.

Government

The city is home to as many residents as short-term travelers, hosting a diverse populace of many races. Overcrowding has become a major headache for the local aristocratic council, which runs the city's affairs until its rightful leader — the young queen — comes of age. Danger from internal and external forces routinely threatens the uneasy balance within Grayhaven.

Notable Features

  • The Ancient Grey Walls: Protect the city from the monsters of the wild but also limit its outward growth — leading to the crowded streets visitors often find maddening. They sharply delineate city dwellers from the farmers and villagers who live in farms and cottages beyond the gates.
  • The Sewers: The truly poor and disadvantaged often find their way to this network of ancient tunnels, descending deep beneath the city into unmappable ruins that predate the city itself.
  • The Port: An industrious port offering the most amenities of any city in the realm and a constant flow of seaborne trade.

Recent Developments

Rats swarming up from the sewers carry a virulent disease. Bounties of a copper coin apiece have been put on rat tails, though some would-be adventurers have reported rats of monstrous size lurking in the dark. Some citizens fear wererats are at play, though the aristocratic council has refused to take action thus far.
